(S)PAR - Another Key Touchpoint in your marketing of you

This week I'm going to add another item to my LinkedIn profile.  I've not decided whether to call it the (S)PAR power statements.  However, I can add it to the LinkedIn website ("other") category in order to name it.  It will be one of the attachments you will be sending to your hiring managers in your list of email weekly touchpoint contacts.  Using BoxNet to make it a webfile allows you to post to LinkedIn.  During the week I'll also be working on my 30/60/90 day powerpoint and insert it as a new application on LinkedIn (I'll address this in a future blog.

(S)PAR stands for Situation, (Problem), Action and Result.  To keep it most effective keep it to 6 lines of text and make sure the result is something that adds quantifiable value to your new venture/company (e.g. percentage of sales, profit, ROI, additional customer, percentage of errors reduced, % increase in customer satisfaction, etc.).

While these results may be bulleted in the Resume under each job, to make them resonate with your buyer you need to add context and your role.  We also should get used to having 6-10 of these (S)PAR power statements ready for your interview.  If you have used these in your resume or LinkedIn profile/email message you need to have a few more you can provide during your interview and/or follow up communication after the interview.

Remember to immediately send an email/thank you note after an interview.  Hand written thank yous may be best but if it takes several days to reach the manager because of the mail delivery, an email might be faster.  Remember to include one problem that surfaced and use your (S)PAR format in the note.  To be even more powerful, use some business intelligence to address one of the problems the company is facing (See blog on business intelligence - Sam Richter)
