Hiring or Not hiring the Unemployed

Here is a blog on whether it's right, economically feasible or even business justified to only hire employed personnel.  Refusing Applications from the Unemployed: Best Practice or Madness? - ERE.

Thanks David Clay for sending the blog post.  There are many forms of legal discrimination that are also out there that would be objectionable if advertised:  "Only beautiful, thin, and athletic people need apply".  We know there is a bias against those who are challenged in these areas but the job announcement shouldn't be so blatant.  One of the key components of FLSA and the requirement for employers to pay overtime was to hire more people and get them back on the tax roles.  If the practice about hiring only the employed gets more traction, there will be an outcry from these unemployed constituents to create another protected class of unemployed.

We as employers just have to think better and be less blatant about our biases.  One of the strategic challenges facing the HR profession is Talent Management and ensuring that our leaders' skills and abilities are transferred to the next generation.  There may be a huge talent sucking sound in the next 10 years as these baby boomers leave the workforce.
